I have the greatest amount of respect for each of these individuals. The amount of work they have put into pursuit of their own goals is truly inspiring. “When I started working out at the gym some 18 years ago I didn’t have a clue how the machines worked or what kind of weight routine to use.
At that time the gym did not have anyone to assist me with any kind of program. So like everybody else I relied on training picked up along the way as a teenager, which led me down the path of never making any kind of progress. So for quite a few years I just drifted along in my own little world thinking I was ‘really in shape’.
Along the way I noticed many personal trainers each doing different routines with their clients. They mostly resembled bartender type personalities… listening to their client’s problem rather than directing or taking them through a work out. I could see they were not using proper form in their training routines so…why would I want to pay a trainer for that?
Tom was one among the many who stood out with a different routine. So I thought I would give him a try. We started on very basic movements using correct arm and leg positions. I was just retired and had a lot of time to give it. At first I used weights, some machines, and jumping and balancing on a Swiss Ball. I thought I would never be able to lift a bar bell straight over my head, or balance myself on that Swiss Ball.
At times Tom had to guide my arms to keep the alignments correct. He was always coaching me and never getting tired or discouraged with my slow progress. I even went through 12 months of cancer treatment with out telling him, so at times I was really weak (especially on squat day that is another story).
Anyway three years passed…fast, and I started riding my single tract bike. I did a very difficult 18 miles trail. My first trail was quite an experience not knowing much about the bike or the trail. I took a few good spills! During those crashes I witnessed a very strange phenomena. I gave into a crash and rolled, having the momentum and movement like an extremely limber willow tree. I had a very graceful fall!
Some of the crashes were pretty serious. Anyway I told Tom about my bike trail experiences and I have to say from deep down, I believe it was the training Tom gave me, that has saved me from serious harm. So Tom gets an A+ from me.”
